March 19, 2009
Friday, February 20th, marked the date of the 2009 Ross County Spelling Bee. Several unique situations were part of the contest this year -- last year's winner was a contestant as well as sister siblings competing against one another.
There were 16 contestants vying for the title and hoping to move on to the Regional Bee on March 7. After 14 rounds of spelling, the eventual winner was one of the sibling pair from Adena Middle School, 6th grader Mackenzie Wright. Second place was won by Tyler Moore, last year's winner, an 8th grader from Zane Trace, while third place honors went to Alicia Hopkins, a 7th grader from Huntington Middle School.
Mackenzie received two savings bonds -- one for $100 and another for $50 along with an IPod. Tyler was awarded a $100 savings bond, while Alicia, our third place winner, received a $50 savings bond.
We are extreme grateful to Citizens National, Huntington, Kingston Nationals and Ross County Banking Center for their generous donations of the savings bonds. Additionally, Horizon/Chillicothe Telephone supplied the IPod Mackenzie won. All participants received a medal.
Special thanks to ESD staff for serving in official capacity for the bee.
We would like to wish Mackenzie "GOOD LUCK" at the regional bee on March 7th.
