The Ross-Pike Educational Service District is pleased to provide numerous professional development opportunities for the 2016-2017 school year.  You can navigate through these offerings on the left hand side of the page by clicking a topic.  Descriptions of these topics are listed below or you can click on the link at the bottom to view a copy of our professional development catalog. 
COST: For non-member districts, there is a fee of $185 for full day workshops and $85 for half day workshops.
 
SUPPORTING RIGOR AND DEEPER LEARNING

Results from the most recent state assessments provide a clear focus for the need to develop the capacity for students to think deeply about the concepts and skills outlined in the content standards of every subject and at every grade level. Recent assessment items ask students to demonstrate a level of understanding for the content that allows them to respond to items with perseverance, flexibility, and creativity. How do we provide students with these high level skills, is the question for educators.

This professional development opportunity will ask educators to first explore the working definition of rigor that brings together the definitions found in “Bloom’s Taxonomy” and “Webb’s Depth of Knowledge”. Educators will use Karin Hess’ publication titled “3 Essential College and Career Skill Sets” along with her “Cognitive Matrix” to gain new insights into the requirements of rigor, and to examine the rigor of released test items, practice items, and their own assessments.

Educators are asked to bring with them a copy of a current summative assessment and a copy of the current standards assessed by the selected assessment. Participants will be asked to analyze each assessment item against the Cognitive Matrix, and to redesign 3-4 items in a manner that would move the item to a higher level on the Cognitive Matrix.

 SUPPORTING THE NEEDS OF DIVERSE LEARNERS
 
Our classrooms are full of diverse learners. High achieving students, students with special needs and those that are at-risk can challenge a teacher’s toolkit of resources. The Ross-Pike ESD will be offering workshops that address high ability students in grades K-5 and 6-12; essential IEP training for new intervention specialists and those who are seasoned veterans that need an update; a review of Response to Intervention systems for grade bands K-4, 5-8 and 9-12; and classroom management for teachers of K-5 students and 6-12 students. Additionally we will be offering positive restraint training (Handle with Care) as a new and re-certification.
 
SUPPORTING TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM
 
Technology touches almost every portion of our lives, our communities and our homes.  Traditionally our classrooms have a tendency to lag behind for several reasons most which have nothing to do with the classroom teacher's desire to provide a high tech environment for their students.
 
Integrating technology into classroom instruction means far more than teaching basic computer skills and software programs in a separate computer based class.  Effective tech integration must happen across curriculum in an effort to enhance and deepen student understanding.  Technology integration should support four components of learning:  active engagement, participation in groups, frequent interaction and feedback, and connection to real-world experts.
 
Effective technology integration occurs when the use of technology is routine and transparent and when it supports the curriculum goals.
 
GRANT WRITING WORKSHOP
 
If you have a program you want to add to your organization but don’t have the funds, grant writing is a good way to go. But knowing which grants to pursue, how to organize your application and all the details can seem overwhelming.

Learn the pitfalls to avoid, how to develop a quality application including a thorough budget and evaluation plan, and everything else you need to know to write effective, winning applications. We will also cover different grant types and how to organize an efficient grant team within your organization.

You will need to bring a laptop and a one to two paragraph summary of the program you would like funded. This can be a brand new program or an existing program you would like to expand. We will develop a grant framework and address all the important and required areas of a grant application.
