After the closure of the Roweton residential treatment center several years ago, the Roweton site has emerged as an educational day program. The campus consists of the Alternative Center and the original Roweton building.
The Roweton building houses students mostly court ordered to attend for various reasons. With integrated service staff onsite, students with behavioral/academic/family issues may have immediate access to services. Some non-court ordered students are also served as referrals from local schools. For more information contact Mike Magill at 702-2210.
The Alternative Center has been providing services since 1994 and provides an alternative placement option for the local county schools' administrators to send students as an alternative to out-of-school suspensions/expulsions. This option can be used to keep more students in school using either the 5 day placement, 10 day placement, or in some cases fulltime placement. Most local schools consider this option as part of their discipline procedures before out-of-school suspensions are considered.
Virtual Learning Academy (VLA) curriculum is utilized in both programs with support staff onsite. Short-term alternative center students are assigned work from their home schools to be completed and returned to their home school teachers for grading and credit.
The Ross County Juvenile Court also places students at the Alternative Center depending on the needs of the students and the reason the student was adjudicated. Truancy from school is a dominant reason for placement but other issues may also be considered. For additional information contact the center at 772-6197.
